The opposition in Montserrat, is claiming that the constitutional changes for the island have been rushed through the Legislative Council by the government’s Chief Minister Reuben Meade without adequate public consultation.
The draft constitution was first circulated in May, after which submissions made yielded a total of 80 recommendations.
According to former chief minister Lowell Lewis, 55 of the recommendations were approved by the UK Foreign Office.
Dr Lewis says the final draft debated in the legislative council last Thursday, should have been widely circulated to allow the general public to scrutinise a document which will impact on the lives of Montserratians, but it was not.
