England whip Jamaica for bronze medal in netball
Jamaica failed in their bid to win the Commonwealth Games bronze medal, when England crushed them 70-47 on the final day of the games in India, Delhi.
The Jamaicans ran out of steam after a competitive first quarter at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex, and handed third-ranked England their second straight bronze medal in a repeat of Melbourne 2006 Games.
Goal attack Simone Forbes led the fourth ranked Jamaicans with 24 goals from 26 attempts and goalshooter Romelda Aikens had 23 from 26 attacks.
For England, goal attack Pamela Cookie scored a game-high 33 goals from 39 attempts, goalshooter Louisa Brownfield scored 31 from 34 attempts and goal shooter Jo Harten had six from 8.
The gold medal was won by number two-ranked New Zealand who defeated top ranked Australia 66-64 in a very close encounter.
Jamaica ended the Commonwealth Games with two gold, four silver and a bronze for a medal haul of seven. Track and field accounted for all of Jamaica’s medals.
Australia finished top of the gold table with 74 gold, 55 silver and 48 bronze for a total haul of 177.
Host India ended second on the gold medal table with 38 gold, 27 silver and 36 bronze for a total haul of 101.
