More than 100 people have been killed and many are missing following a tsunami triggered by an earthquake off the coast of Sumatra in Indonesia.

Scores of houses were destroyed by waves after the 7.7 magnitude quake, which struck 20 kilometres or 13 miles under the ocean floor near the Mentawai islands.

Disaster officials say 10 villages on the islands were swept away by the tsunami.

Damage and rough weather are said to be delaying efforts to reach the affected area.

Meanwhile, in another section of the country, at least 13 people have been killed after Indonesia’s most volatile volcano erupted.

Its reported that Mount Merapi, in central Java, began erupting just before dusk yesterday, spewing plumes of hot ash and rocks.

Officials say the volcano victims, including a small baby, were killed by the heat and burning ash.
