The damage caused by Hurricane Tomas has triggered a US$12.8 million insurance payout to three countries from a regional coverage scheme.

The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility released the figures based on preliminary calculations, using its modelled losses.

Barbados will receive US$8.5 million, St Lucia, US$3.2 million, and St Vincent and the Grenadines will get US$1.1 million.

The storm battered the three countries on the weekend, costing tens of millions of dollars in damage.

Tomas reportedly killed at least 12 people in St Lucia.
