BBC staff stages strike

Members of the National Union of Journalists in Britain have begun a 48-hour strike at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in a dispute over proposed pension plan changes.

The just over 4,000 BBC workers voted to go on strike after they were unable to reach an agreement with the company’s management on the payment of pension.

The dispute stems from the BBC's plans to reduce a £1.5 billion pension deficit by capping increases in pensionable pay at 1 per cent starting April 1.

The BBC has advised that the strike will result in disruptions to new programmes.

This includes the main TV bulletins, Newsnight, Radio 4 news programmes, and those on Radio 5 live.

BBC workers have also planned industrial action for November 15 and 16.
