British retailers urged to embrace Fair Trade

British retailers are being urged to support social initiatives such as Fair Trade, instead of just looking to maximise their profits.

Peter Marks, the Chief Executive of the Co-operative Group, one of the UK's largest companies, wants Fair Trade products to become the norm in British supermarkets.

He says the scheme makes a fantastic contribution to the lives of workers in developing economies.

Caribbean bananas are among products being sold in the UK under the Fair trade label.

Marks says Fair Trade is an example of how businesses can be socially responsible.
