The police in Trinidad and Tobago say they have discovered illegal wiretapping of phone and email messages of members of parliament and private citizens.
Officials say the wire-tapping was started by the state Security Intelligence Agency under the previous Patrick Manning administration and continued up until two weeks ago.
The head of the agency has been fired following the discovery.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar made the announcement on her return from a trip to the United States.
She was one among the people whose phones were illegally wire-tapping while she was the Opposition Leader.
