Leaders gather in Georgetown for summit

Leaders of the Union of South American nations plan to create a democracy charter that would serve as a guide for their 12-nation group if any of them face an attempted coup.

Guyana’s foreign minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett made the announcement as the leaders gathered in Georgetown for a summit.

The charter was proposed after a police revolt in Ecuador in September that President Rafael Correa said was an attempt to overthrow him.

Nine presidents including Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez are expected to attend the summit.
