Atkinson to compete on first day of FINA Championships
Olympian Alia Atkinson will be the first Jamaican swimmer in action at the 10th FINA World Swimming Championships in Dubai this week.
The five-day championships will begin tomorrow.
Atkinson will bow into action on the opening day when she takes part in the heats of the women’s 50-metre breaststroke.
Victoria Hoo, the other Jamaican representative, will be in action tomorrow. She will compete in the women’s 800-metre freestyle, which is a timed final.
Hoo will make her second appearance in the pool on Friday in the heats of the women’s 400-metre freestyle.
Atkinson will also be into action on that day when she competes in the heats of the women’s 100-metre breaststroke.
The two Jamaicans are also down to compete on the fifth and final day on Sunday. Atkinson will swim in the opening round of the women’s 200-metre breaststroke and Hoo will take part in the women’s 200-metre freestyle.
Natasha Moodie, Brad Hamilton and Kendese Nangle were all selected on the team but had to turn down the invitations because of studies.
Angela Chuck, who represented Jamaica at the 2000 Olympics, has been appointed national coach and manager.
