Firebirds win pre-season tournament

Queensland Firebirds, with Jamaican goal shooter Romelda Aiken, gained a timely boost of confidence ahead of this year’s ANZ Championship, when they outran Central Pulse 50-46 in a pre-season tournament yesterday.
The Firebirds proved too hot for their New Zealand rivals in the Final of the four-team competition.
The ANZ Championship opens on Sunday, February 13, with the Firebirds playing their first match on Monday, February 21, against the New South Wales Swift at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.
Last year, the Firebirds narrowly failed to reach the play-offs, finishing fifth on 14 points.
The Adelaide Thunderbirds, whose line-up includes Jamaica-born goal shooter Carla Borrego, are the defending champions.
