T&T government, opposition agree on resuming death penalty

The Trinidad and Tobago government and opposition have united to pass legislation to resume the execution of convicted killers.



Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissesar and the opposition leader, Keith Rowley, agreed to cooperate on the bill and for the legislation to be fast tracked for it to go to Parliament.



It has been over 10 years since the state has been able to execute a convicted killer.



A major element is the placing of murders into three categories.



Persons convicted of brutal and very deliberate killings will receive the death penalty, while persons convicted on the lesser charge of will receive a life sentence.



However, for involuntary murders, it will be up to judges to deliver sentences.
