Israel expresses disappointment

The Israeli ambassador to Suriname has expressed his country's disappointment over the decision of the CARICOM member nation to recognise a Palestinian state.

Amiram Magid says the recognition of a Palestinian state with borders predating the Six-Day War of 1967 is counterproductive to Mideast peace efforts.

Suriname has defended its decision, saying Palestinian people's rights should be acknowledged.

Suriname and Guyana recently joined members of South America's Unasur group in recognising Palestinian statehood.
