St Lucians to go to the polls this year

The St Lucian Prime Minister Stephenson King has announced that general elections will be held this year.

King made the announcement against the backdrop of heightened political campaigning by both major parties on the island.

General elections in St Lucia are constitutionally by March 6, next year, which would push the poll into the three-month extension period allowed by the constitution.

On more than one occasion, the ruling party had hinted that it would make use of the extension to have the elections next year while the island recovers from Hurricane Tomas.
