Jamaica to compete at Golden League
A host of Jamaican track stars, led by former 100-metre world record holder Asafa Powell will be in action today at the Rome Golden League meet.
The Jamaican athletes will use the opportunity to warm up for the Beijing Olympic Games.
Powell will run the 100 metres and will face a quality field including, Derrick Atkins of the Bahamas and Trinidad’s Darrel Brown.
The field also includes Jamaicans Nesta Carter and Michael Frater.
National 400-metre hurdles champion Danny McFarlane and second-place finisher Isa Phillips will face a strong field in the men’s 400-metre hurdles.
Following their exciting battles at the National Championships in the sprints, Kerron Stewart and Sherone Simpson will continue their rivalry in the 200 metres. The field also includes American Sanya Richards.
National 100-metre hurdles champion, Brigitte Foster-Hylton and runner-up, Delloreen Ennis-London are also down to compete. They will face off with Spanish hurdler Josephine Onyia in the 100-metre hurdles.
Other Jamaicans down to participate are Sanjay Ayre and Ricardo Chamber in the men’s 400 metres, Markino Buckley in the men’s 400 hurdles and Shevron Stoddart and Melanie Walker in the women’s 400 hurdles.
There are also Kalise Spencer, Sherika Williams and Novlene Williams-Mills in the women’s 400 metres.
