Suriname debates tax increases

The parliament in Suriname is debating a range of tax increases and new levies to plug a US$400 million budget shortfall.



The government has already started implementing some of the controversial measures, such as doubling taxes on petrol and diesel.



The government has granted a pay increase for its large public sector, which it says has taken up a large portion of its income.
