Cayman Islands authorities concerned with declining population

Authorities in the Cayman Islands are raising concern about the likely impact of a declining population on the economy.

Estimates in 2008 projected that the Cayman Islands would have a total of just over 57 thousand people.

But Premier McKeeva Bush says preliminary results from the 2010 census show that the population has declined to 55 thousand.

He says the new results compel the government to continue pushing for policies that will promote sustainable population growth.

Cayman has already seen a number of multi-national businesses move their operations to Ireland, Switzerland and other countries.

There are tens of thousands of companies registered in the territory, but most have no employees or physical offices on the islands.
