UN appoints new commander for Haiti mission

United Nations’ Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon has appointed a new force commander for the UN mission helping to foster stability in Haiti.



Mr. Ban has appointed Major General Luiz Eduardo Ramos Pereira of Brazil, Force Commander of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti. The Mission has been in Haiti since mid-2004, to assist the former transitional government to maintain stability following the departure of President Jean Bertrand Aristide.



Major General Pereira will replace Major General Luiz Guilherme Paul Cruz, also from Brazil, who will complete his assignment on March 31. The UN Mission comprises over 10,000 uniformed personnel from Latin America, Jordan, Nepal, the Philippines, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka and the United States.
