The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has begun using videoconferencing to conduct court hearings.

The court had its first hearing using its new videoconferencing facilities yesterday during a case management conference in which the applicants were located in Suriname.

Attorneys for other parties were in videoconferencing centres in Barbados and at the Court’s headquarters in Trinidad.

The Judges of the CCJ were also in the Court’s headquarters in Trinidad.

These facilities afforded attorneys representing CARICOM, and the Member State of Suriname the opportunity to appear before the Court without having to travel to Port of Spain.

The case management conference, which was held in the matter of Hummingbird Rice Mills Limited versus Suriname and the Caribbean Community, was filed in the original jurisdiction of the Court.

The application by Hummingbird Rice Mills Limited for special leave to commence proceedings has been listed for hearing on June 3.
