Haiti starts shipment of goods to Grenada

Haiti has made its first shipment of goods to Grenada under a temporary agreement with other CARICOM countries.

The CARICOM Secretariat says the shipment, made on a non-reciprocal preferential basis, was sent last week.

CARICOM Assistant Secretary-General, Trade and Economic Development, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, hails the development as a positive one by Haiti to become a part of CARICOM’s trading arrangements.

The shipment of items, including wall decorations, candle and napkin holders, and wind chimes, was made under the special arrangement agreed by the Council of Trade and Economic Development (COTED) last year.

Haiti was preparing for participation in the Trade in Goods regime of the CARICOM Single Market when the earthquake struck in January 2010, killing an estimated 300 thousand people and leaving more than a million others homeless.
