Ashmeade, Fraser-Price shine at JN/Jamaica Invitational track meet.

Former World Junior and Youth silver medalist, Nickel Ashmeade last night demonstrated that he is ready for the big games when he pulled off a major upset in the 200-metre run at the eighth annual JN/Jamaica International Invitational track and field championship at the National Stadium.



The 21-year-old, ran a spectacular and world leading 19.95 to improve on his personal best of 20.40. Ashmeade beat a stellar field including Asafa Powell, Steve Mullings, Nester Carter, and American Wallace Spearmon.



Mullings finished second in a time of 20.15, while Spearmon was third in 20.18.



Meanwhile, Olympic and World 100-metre champion, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price kick-started her 2011 season with a big win, claiming the women’s 200-metre ahead of World and Olympic 200-metre champion, Veronica Campbell-Brown.



Fraser-Price won in a personal best 22.10 ahead of Campbell-Brown, who clocked 22.37, and Bahamian Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie 22.78.



In the 100 meters, young sprint sensation Yohan Blake registered a personal best 9.80, to burst the tape ahead of Antigua’s Daniel Bailey 9.94 and American Michael Rodgers 9.96 who finished third.



In the women’s equivalent, American Carmelita Jetter was too much for the field and won in a time of 10.86, eight tenths of a second ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Kelly-Ann Baptiste.



Jamaican Sherone Simpson 11.07 finished a distant third.
