The Suriname government has dismissed police commissioner Delano Braam amid the rising crime situation in the Dutch-speaking country.

Martin Misiedjan, the justice and police minister said Braam was informed on the weekend about the decision to sack him.

Misiedjan said meetings were held with the police commanders, and the police association to review the force and the concerns of the government.

Since the Bouterse administration came into office in September last year there has been an upsurge in violent crimes, particularly armed robberies.
