Hunt begins for Jamaica’s team to Daegu

The eagerly anticipated National Senior Championships, to select Jamaica’s team to the World Championships in Daegu, Korea, will begin this morning at the National Stadium.



Only the top three will secure spots to compete in the individual events at the August 27 to September 4 World Championships.



The Championships will be without the world’s fastest man Usain Bolt and Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce, the reigning World Championship 100-metre champion.



However, both athletes have already achieved qualification to the Daegu meet as a result of their victories at the Berlin World Championships, two years ago.



Melaine Walker and Brigitte Foster Hylton are also defending champions and have received byes for the World Championships. However, they will compete at the meet.



Although there will be several interesting events, most focus will be on the men’s 100 metres as six of the competitors have gone under 10 seconds this season.



The United States-based Steve Mullings is leading the list of sub-10 sprinters with 9.80, which ranks him as number two in the event so far.



Veteran sprinter Michael Frater is well aware of the depth of talent that he is up against. However, Frater is not daunted.



The first two rounds of the men’s 100 metres are scheduled for today with the semi-finals and final down for tomorrow.



The first event on the track this morning will be the opening heat of the women’s 400-metre hurdles at 9.30.
