France arms Libyan rebels

The French military has confirmed that it air dropped weapons to Libyan rebels fighting Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's troops.



According to the military, light arms and ammunition were sent to Berber tribal rebels, who are fighting in the Western mountains.



French newspaper had earlier reported that the arms included rocket launchers and anti-tank missiles.



The newspaper had also claimed that France did not inform its allies about the move.



France is a leading force in the NATO operation in Libya to oust Colonel Gaddafi.
