PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Two Jamaican nationals were fined a total of TT$15,000 (US$2,500) after they pleaded guilty to traffic an estimated TT$19,000 (US$3,166) worth of marijuana.
Jermaine Rowe and Omar Dean were arrested at a Port of Spain hotel over the weekend and have been given three weeks to pay the fines or face three months in prison when they appeared before Senior Magistrate Lucina Cardenas-Ragoonanan on Tuesday.
The court was told that on July 9, the manager of the hotel alerted authorities after getting a smell and hearing strange noises coming from the room in which the men were staying.
When police responded they found 51 plastic packets of high-grade Jamaican marijuana, laxatives and bleach in the men’s possession. Dean, who has a detention order, was remanded to the Immigration Detention Centre, Aripo.
