New CARICOM secretary general named

Dominican-born Irwin LaRocque has been named as Sir Edwin Carrington’s replacement as secretary general of CARICOM.



Fifty six year old LaRocque will be the seventh CARICOM secretary general.



Carrington stepped down at the start of the year after 18 years in the post.



LaRocque has been serving since 2005 as the assistant secretary general for trade and economic integration at the Guyana-based CARICOM Secretariat.



In a brief statement following the announcement yesterday, LaRocque said he was humbled to have been given the opportunity to continue serving the region.



LaRocque was educated at Queen’s College and the New School for Social Research in New York, and New York University, where he majored in political philosophy, political economics and economics.



He has a wealth of experience in management, public administration, economic development, trade, foreign affairs and diplomacy.
