Jamaica secures two more gold medals

Jacques Harvey and Carrie Russell won the 100-metre gold medals to put Jamaica top of the gold medal table on today’s second day of track and field at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China.
Harvey beat Rytis Sakalauskas of Lithuania in a very close men’s 100-metres final for the gold. Both runners were credited with in 10.14 seconds, but Harvey got the verdict.
The time is a national record for Sakalauskas. Bingtian Su of China won the bronze in 10.27.
Russell clocked a lifetime best 11.05 to win the gold medal in the women’s 100 metres. Khrystyna Stuy of Ukraine won the silver medal in a season-best 11.34 and Lina Grincikaite of Lithuaia took the bronze in 11.44.
Jamaica have now won three gold medals to lead Poland, who have secured two.
O’Dayne Richards won Jamaica’s first medal by taking the gold in the men’s shot put on yesterday’s first day of track and field.
Meanwhile, Pete Matthews has advanced to the medal round of the men’s 400 metres following a second place finish in semi-final three. Matthews clocked 46.21, behind Brazilian Anderson Henriques, who clocked 46.14.
