Jamaica’s 52-member track and field squad is now at the Game Village in Beijing, China after a three-hour bus ride from the training camp in Tianjin, which is located 69 miles southeast of Beijing.

The Jamaicans led by the world’s two fastest men, Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell, checked into the Olympic athletes’ village earlier today.

The squad arrived four days ahead of the first heats of the 100 metres.

Bolt, 21, who took .02 of a second off Powell’s mark to set the world record at 9.72 seconds in May, is aiming for the 100-200 double in Beijing.

Powell, who held the world record for almost three years, is targeting his first gold medal at an Olympic or world championship meet.

Team manager, Ludlow Watt, said the athletes achieved a lot during the camp. Track and field has the greatest potential for earning medals for Jamaica.

The country has a very rich history in track and field since its debut at the 1948 Olympics in London.

Since that time Jamaica’s medal tally has climbed to 44 from 13 Olympics. The figure includes seven gold, 21 silver and 16 bronze.
