IAAF rejects US protest

The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) rejected a USA protest over the result of the women’s 100 metres that Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser won yesterday.

The USA lodged a protest over the result of the race in which Jamaica posted an unprecedented sweep of the top three positions.

The protest resulted in a postponement of the post-race press conference and the medal ceremony, which was scheduled for yesterday.

The Americans argue that Torri Edwards had moved in the blocks before the gun and that the starter should have called a false start.

The meet’s Jury of Appeal examined the video, consulted the International Technical Officer and the Chief Starter and decided to support the decision of the starter that a false start should not have been called.

The little-known Fraser won in a personal best 10.78 seconds and her teammates Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart tied for second spot in 10.98 seconds.

It was the first time in Olympic history that one country was sweeping the first three spots in this event.

Fraser’s gold medal follows Usain Bolt’s astonishing performance to win the men’s 100 metres in a new world record.
