Grenada Ports Authority seeks new wage payment deadline

The Grenada Ports Authority has sought a new deadline to pay outstanding wages to workers who went on strike last week over the authority’s failure to meet its original commitment.
In an attempt to avert further industrial action, the authority’s general manager, Ambrose Phillip announced a new payment period between November 15 and March 31 2012 after missing the October deadline.
Union sources said the workers are unlikely to accept the new payment schedule as employees maintain a go slow at the nation’s ports.
Port workers are owed XC$379,000, which is the final payout of a three part arbitration settlement awarded to the workers in 2007.
Phillip said Ports Authority is unable to meet the deadline because of lingering cash flow problems.
