Shivnarine Chanderpaul became the first West Indies player to claim a major prize at the International Cricket Council (ICC) Awards when he copped the Cricketer of the Year honours yesterday in Dubai.

He received the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy.

The left-handed Chanderpaul, who also made the shortlist last year, won ahead of Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardena and South Africans Graeme Smith and Dale Steyn.

During the voting period, Chanderpaul played eight Test matches, scoring 819 runs at an average of 91.00, including three centuries and six fifties, all of which were against the top seven teams in the world.

Chanderpaul was also named in the ICC World Test Team of the Year.

England women’s captain Charlotte Edwards, who presided over 13 victories in an unbeaten home summer series, won the women’s award.

Steyn was awarded the Test Player of the Year award, while India’s one-day captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the One Day International Player of the Year award.

Yuvraj Singh became the inaugural winner of the 20/20 International Performance of the Year.

Jamaica and West Indies captain Chris Gayle was also short listed for that award.

Ajantha Mendis, Sri Lanka’s 23 year old spin star, won the Emerging Player of the Year award.
