Caymanians vote for single member system

Voters in the Cayman Islands have approved a proposal to change its electoral system to one of single member constituencies and one vote.



However, officials said although a significant majority of Cayman Islands voters backed the 'one man, one vote' referendum, the "yes" votes were not enough to make the proposal legally binding.



At least 7,582 votes were needed to legally bind the government to enact the single member district voting system.



Reports indicate that the result is unlikely to move the McKeeva Bush administration towards changing the system as it had opposed the single vote-single seat proposal.



Premier Bush announced the referendum in April, following a two-month campaign led by a popular grassroots movement calling for a change to the electoral system.
