Afghan Parliament calls for replacment of senior ministers

Published:Saturday | August 4, 2012 | 6:40 PM

The Afghanistan Parliament has passed a vote of no confidence in two of its most senior ministers and demanded that they be replaced.

However, President Hamid Karzai's office says he will take a decision tomorrow on the future of Defence Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak and Interior Minister Besmillah Mohammadi.

The president has the power to keep them in their posts for one month and, in the past, he has retained his ministers for longer periods.

Rahim Wardak and Besmillah Mohammadi have been criticised for failing to prevent cross-border shellings from Pakistan and for security lapses that resulted in the assassinations of senior officials.

They have also been questioned by MPs over allegations of corruption.
