United States (US) astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the Moon, has died at the age of 82.

Armstrong’s family says he died today of complications from heart surgery he had earlier this month.

After walking on the moon on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong famously described it as a small step for man and one giant leap for mankind.

Last November, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award in the US.

Born in the state of Ohio in 1930, Armstrong took his first flight with his father at the age of six and immediately developed a passion for flying.

He was the commander of the Apollo 11 spacecraft, which became his last space mission.
