Guyana to re-introduce corporal punishment in schools

Guyana’s Education Minister Shaik Baksh has announced that draft legislation is currently in place to reintroduce corporal punishment in schools.

The initiative is in response to concerns of parents in Georgetown about the rising violence in South Georgetown schools.

Several reports have been made of instances where students physically abused their teachers and even their parents.

The parents are reportedly in support of the move saying it might be necessary to help students understand that school is a place to learn and cultivate learned behaviour.

Mr. Baksh said the matter of flogging is the source of much debate and has been addressed in the draft education legislation currently before the Attorney General.

He said his ministry recognises the value of religious education in schools and that plans are in place to make the subject compulsory in the curriculum.
