The Trinidad and Tobago Parliament has passed legislation to give soldiers police powers.
The coalition People’s Partnership government says the law is part of its crime fighting strategy.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar has insisted that the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2013 does not violate the Constitution.
The main Opposition has said the legislation represents the first step in institutionalising the involvement of the military in matters of civilian government.
