Bahamian opposition wants illegal gambling shops closed

The Bahamas main opposition Free National Movement wants the Perry Christie government to enforce the law and ensure that illegal web-shops are closed.

Party leader Dr Hubert Minnis said he was also calling for the Commissioner of Police to enforce the law after the Chief Justice overturned an order which prevented law enforcement officials from enforcing the gambling laws of the country.

He said the Chief Justice had also refused an application by the web-shop owners for a full injunction, pending trial.

In January, voters overwhelmingly rejected a referendum to legalise gambling for citizens of the Bahamas, where locals are already barred from betting in casinos at the islands' tourist resorts.
