Jamaican international captain Ricardo Gardner inspired Bolton to a 2-0 victory over Manchester City in their English Premier League game yesterday at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium.

Gardner, celebrating his 11th year at Bolton, scored in the 76th minute. It was his first league goal since December 2002.

The Jamaican, who replaced the injured Mustapha Riga shortly before half-time, applied the finishing touch with a threatening low cross in the 88th minute that Richard Dunne could only deflect into his own goal.

His effort lifted Bolton off the relegation zone with only their third win of the season and eased the woes of his troubled manager Gary Megson.
