JFF gets more time

The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has been granted more time to know whether it will be asked to repay a debt of 135,000 pounds to the English Football Association.

The decision was made yesterday following a lengthy meeting between the English FA and the JFF at The FA’s headquarters in London.

Chairman of the English FA, Sir David Treisman agreed to put off the debt until after the 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals in South Africa.

The outstanding debt is owned on tickets from a friendly international between Jamaica and England two years ago in Manchester, England.

The meeting between the two associations was arranged after a story published in England last week said the English FA would be taking action to recover the money.

JFF boss Captain Horace Burrell contended that in April Simon Johnson, a senior executive of the England FA, ratified a deal to allow the Jamaicans to write-off the debt and invest it in a youth training center on the island.

However, the English FA revealed that the agreement needed to be signed off by its board of management and this has not happened.

The English FA will now discuss the proposal put forward by the JFF to convert the debt into equity for a youth development facility.
