Jury selection being made in Trayvon Martin's murder case

Tensions are said to be high in Florida as the jury is being selected in the murder trial of a US neighbourhood watchman who killed an unarmed black teenager last year.

Twenty-nine-year-old George Zimmerman, says he shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in self-defence in Sanford, Florida, in February 2012.

Prosecutors say Zimmerman, who is accused of second-degree murder, racially profiled the teenager, who was on his way home after buying sweets.

The case fuelled debate about race, as police took 44 days to make an arrest.

Reports say the town of Sanford is tense as residents are not looking forward to the trial.

However, the teenager’s family members say they are relieved that the trial has begun.
