Human intervention needed to curb lionfish population

Published:Saturday | July 13, 2013 | 6:21 PM

A group of researchers in the United States say native predators in the waters of the Caribbean are unable to stop the increasing growth of the aggressive lionfish.

The researchers from at the University of North Carolina (UNC) say the voracious red lionfish is out-eating nearly all ocean predators in the Caribbean.

In addition, they say Mother Nature appears unable to control the impact of this development on the local reef fish.

As a result, Professor of Biology at UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences John Bruno says this makes human intervention the most promising solution to the problem.
