T&T PM says local polls will be held when due

Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar says Local Government elections will be held when they are constitutionally due insisting there will be no postponement of the polls.

Last month, Persad Bissessar said she had been approached by members of her ruling United National Congres, the biggest partner in the coalition People’s Partnership government, to postpone the polls.

The request followed the July 29 defeat for the party in the by-election for the Chaguanas West seat, which was a strong hold of the party.

She told reporters yesterday that the issue of postponing the elections had divided the Cabinet with some members in support of the postponement.

However, Prime Minister Persad Bissessar told reporters the local government elections will be held within the time frame set by law.
