UN warns of negative effects of Venezuela’s withdrawal from rights convention
The United Nations has expressed concern about Venezuela’s withdrawal from the American Human Rights Convention, which came into being on Tuesday.
The UN says the move by Venezuela could have a negative impact on human rights in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The UN says to date, with the exception of Venezuela, 24 nations in the Caribbean and Latin America have ratified or adopted the Convention.
In September last year, Venezuela announced its withdrawal from the Convention despite repeated calls from the UN to reconsider.
The American Convention on Human Rights defines the human rights which the ratifying States have agreed to respect and ensure, and led to the creation of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
