Turks Caicos governor denies British economic intervention

The governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands has denied that the British government is taking over administration of the finances of the territory.

The speculation of direct intervention from London followed the announcement that two British financial administrators were being sent to Grand Turk.

Governor Gordon Wetherell says the officers will be involved in monitoring how local authorities spend a grant of about $US7.5 million on hurricane reconstruction.

The news has come at a delicate time for the administration of the Turks and Caicos, which is the subject of a British-ordered investigation into allegations of corruption.
