Widespread UK, Irish Republic flight delays

Published:Saturday | December 7, 2013 | 9:15 AM

Numerous flights have been delayed across the United Kingdom and in the Irish Republic because of a fault at an air traffic control centre.

The BBC says the affected airports include Heathrow, Stansted, Cardiff, Dublin, and Glasgow.

The National Air Traffic Control Service has explained that the delays are the result of a difficulty in switching from night time to daytime operation at its Swanwick centre, in Hampshire.

According to Operations director, Juliet Kennedy, there is no assurance how long it will take to resolve the problem.

She said the problem is capacity, as the control centre is still running a reduced night time service.
