Trinidad murder toll
Criminologist Professor Ramesh Deosaran wants Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Patrick Manning to move quickly to address the country’s increasing murder toll.
At least 502 people have reportedly been murdered in the twin island republic since the start of the year compared with 380 for the similar period last year.
Mr. Deosaran, who is also an independent senator, says he doesn’t feel a sense of urgency with the manner in which the problem is being handled by the authorities.
He’s calling for an immediate review of the crime plan, as well as policies that have been delivered and articulated in the last three years.
The Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce wants the Patrick Manning administration to introduce legislation to outlaw criminal gangs in the country.
Chamber President Ian Collier said the government must tackle the issue head on as action is needed now.
