TCI police to continue search for Haitian boat casualties

Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force says another attempt will be made today to find additional casualties from yesterday’s incident where a vessel carrying Haitian migrants capsised.

In a statement Police Commissioner Colin Farquhar said it is not anticipated that any further bodies will be found.

Farquhar says there is one less casualty than what was reported earlier with the number of confirmed deaths being 17.

He says this group consists of 12 adult males and five adult females.

The TCI police commissioner says post mortems are to be conducted on the bodies, after which they will be returned to Haiti.

He says the 33 Haitian detainees who were rescued will be sent home at the earliest opportunity.

Farquhar says the stricken vessel has been removed and will be central to the police’s ongoing investigations.
