JAAA ‘Athlete of the year’ awards
Jamaica’s athletes of the year will be announced shortly at the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association’s ‘Athlete of the Year’ awards luncheon, which is now taking place at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston.
Triple Olympic champion and world record holder Usain Bolt looks a safe bet to take the Male Athlete of the Year award.
He was recently crowned the International Association of Athletics Federations’ Male Athlete of the Year for 2008.
Meanwhile, three athletes are vying for the female Athlete of the Year.
Heading the list is Veronica Campbell-Brown, the second female to win back-to-back Olympic 200-metre title when she took the event at the Beijing Olympics in 21.74 seconds.
The other contenders are Shelly-Ann Fraser, who became the first Jamaican to win the Olympic 100 metres, with a 10.78 clocking in Beijing and Melaine Walker, the 400 metre-hurdle champions in an Olympic Record 52.64.
