Prolific left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul continued his good form to score his 20th Test Century and guided West Indies to 258 for six on the opening day of the second and final Test against New Zealand.

Chanderpaul was unbeaten on an even century from 224 balls at the close. He has so far slammed nine fours and three sixes in just over four hours at the crease.

With West Indies struggling at 74 for four moments before the lunch break, Chanderpaul found a good partner in Brendan Nash and they combined in an invaluable 163-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Nash, the Australia-born Jamaican left-handed, in only his second Test scored a confident 74 before falling late in the day.

Earlier the West Indies lost captain Chris Gayle 36, Ramnaresh Sarwan 11, Xavier Marshall 6 and Sewnarine Chattergoon 13 in quick succession after a solid opening stand of 43.

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori finished the day with two for 58 while seamer Iain O’Brien took two for 59.
