The Government of Canada says it views with great concern reports of death threats made against a Trinidad and Tobago journalist.

The concerns by the Canadian High Commission in Port-of-Spain come even as Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams says the threats against the journalist could be the result of his own wrongdoing.

Mark Bassant, a senior investigative journalist with the Caribbean Communication Network’s TV6, has reported that he was forced to flee Trinidad and Tobago after receiving several death threats because of a stories he had written.

In a statement released yesterday, the Canadian High Commission said an open, democratic, transparent and accountable society is one where all citizens and media can express themselves freely, no matter their position on public issues.

Head of news at TV6, Dominic Kallipersad says Bassant received the threats while working on sensitive investigative material and that National Security Minister Gary Griffith and the acting Police Commissioner were notified.
