Antigua's first political debate fizzles

Published:Thursday | May 29, 2014 | 9:40 AM

The Antigua Christian Council says it has been forced to scrap plans for a political debate between the leaders of the two main political parties ahead of the June 12 general election.

The announcement came after Prime Minister Badlwin Spencer failed to respond to the initiative.

Council president Major Byron Maxam says the leader of the main opposition Antigua Labour Party had accepted the invitation to participate in what would have been the first ever debate between political leaders ahead of a general election.

Maxam says the council is disappointed that the ruling United Progressive Party, led by Spencer, has not even acknowledged its invitation.

Spencer is seeking a third consecutive term in office.
